Best shared workspaces for Claude Code and Codex
Choose a shared project environment for two coding agents without confusing shared files with safe concurrent edits.
Maintained by the Matrix OS team. Product instructions are updated with the supported workflow.
Claude has worked out why the test fails. Now you want Codex to take a look. Ideally, the handoff involves reading the findings, not reinstalling the project and asking you the same five questions.
Matrix OS, Coder, Codespaces, and a server you operate can provide a workspace used by multiple agent tools. Their operating models differ. Here, “shared” means sharing project context across tools; it does not imply unrestricted multi-user access.
Compare workspace choices
| Option | Best fit | Human access | Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matrix OS | One personal workspace across agents | Desktop/web, terminal, files, browser | From $20/month plus AI |
| Coder | Platform-team provisioned environments | Configured developer interfaces | Platform and infrastructure |
| Codespaces | Repository-defined setup | Browser/editor terminal | Compute/storage and allowances |
| Your own Linux server | Custom operating model | SSH and tools you configure | Server plus maintenance |

Share context, separate mutable work
A good handoff starts with a small, current brief: the goal, the test command, the findings, and what is still uncertain. Keep it where both agents can read it, and tell them to do so.
The brief is shareable. A working checkout needs more care. If two agents edit it at once, the next surprise may be a conflict rather than a useful result. Give writing tasks separate branches or worktrees and separate ports or databases where needed.
A shared computer saves setup work. You still have to decide who owns each change.
When to use Matrix OS vs another workspace
Use Matrix when you want one navigable environment and straightforward access to agent output. A practical journey is to connect the tools needed for a task, ask an agent to organize relevant context, inspect that context, and reuse it in the next session.
Personal context that becomes more useful across agents is Matrix's product direction. In this evaluation, require visible saved notes and source references; do not assume an automatic personal wiki or cross-agent recall has been proven for every workflow.
Use Coder when platform administrators need reusable environment definitions on their infrastructure. Use Codespaces when repository setup is the main concern and its lifecycle fits the task. Operate a server yourself when infrastructure flexibility justifies maintenance.
Test the handoff
Ask Claude Code to diagnose a failing test and save its findings without editing. Then ask Codex to read those findings, verify the explanation, and propose a patch in a separate worktree.
Notice where the second agent spends its time. Does it find the source files? Does it understand which statements are observations and which are guesses? Does it repeat setup that the workspace should already contain?
That exercise makes context quality visible. You can improve the brief, fix a missing dependency, or correct a stale note. “The agents share memory” is much harder to debug.
FAQ
Does shared context mean agents share their private conversations?
No. Use explicit project files or supported integrations. Do not assume one agent can read another provider's conversation history.
Can a team share one personal Matrix computer?
Evaluate organizational access requirements separately. A personal workspace is not a promise of a shared multi-user security model.
Which plan should I test?
Start with the smallest plan that fits the actual task. Builder adds capacity for parallel work; check current concurrency and provider limits before running agents together.
