Matrix handbook
How we build, measure, and maintain Matrix OS.
The handbook explains how Matrix engineers and contributors work. It is public so the reasoning, standards, and measurements behind our work are easy to find.
For help using Matrix OS or building on its interfaces, start with the product documentation. Engineering workflows and performance measurements live here.
Engineering
- CI and performance metrics: the five-minute feedback target, timing definitions, profiling, caching, test isolation, and benchmark acceptance.
- Contributor testing guide: local commands, test categories, and test-driven development conventions.
Publishing handbook changes
Keep guidance tied to reviewed source and explain whether a workflow is proposed or shipped. Publish reproducible methods and aggregate measurements. Credentials, customer information, private incident details, and infrastructure access instructions belong in private operator documentation.
