Reach your private general Matrix agent from a shared WhatsApp business chat.
Message the Matrix business chat on WhatsApp, link your Matrix account, and talk to your own general agent. Matrix uses Meta's Cloud API to connect each sender to a private Chat on that owner's primary Matrix computer.
Controlled pilot
These steps apply after Matrix has configured, deployed, and verified the business chat for your account. Access is limited to explicitly approved European Economic Area (EEA) accounts. Eligibility follows the recipient's WhatsApp account identifier; being physically in the EU alone does not enable access. A documentation update or a Meta test number does not mean the service is available to everyone.
Connect your account
You need your own Matrix account, a running primary Matrix computer, and a ready general agent with a usable model. Your pilot invitation provides the Matrix business chat to use.
- Open that business chat in WhatsApp and send a message, such as Hey Matrix.
- Open the connection link Matrix replies with.
- Sign in to the Matrix account that owns the computer you want to use.
- Choose Send me a connection code on the connection page.
- Read the code delivered in WhatsApp and enter it on the Matrix page.
- Review the permission notice and choose Connect my agent.
The link and code expire. If either stops working, send Matrix a new message to request a fresh link. Enter the code only on the Matrix connection page; keep the code and connection link private.
This flow uses your existing WhatsApp account to message Matrix. You do not need to scan a personal-account pairing QR code, create your own Meta developer app, or provide API credentials. To sync conversations from your personal inbox into Matrix, see Messages.
One private general Chat
After connecting, send your requests in the same WhatsApp business chat. Matrix keeps a persistent Matrix · WhatsApp Chat on your primary computer, with its transcript in your owner-controlled database. Other people using the shared business number reach their own agents and Chats.
Open Matrix to read the full conversation, inspect work, or continue a request that needs a question answered or an approval. The pilot does not accept approval decisions through WhatsApp.
Connecting authorizes your general agent to respond and act with its existing Matrix Chat permissions. Anyone who can use your linked WhatsApp account can reach that agent. Linking does not install an agent, provision a computer, or add model funding.
The upcoming general Matrix Pi agent is not supplied by this connection flow. The current Pi coding harness does not qualify as the general agent for this pilot. WhatsApp uses a ready general agent exposed by your Matrix runtime; a future Matrix Pi general agent must be available in that runtime before it can serve this chat.
Supported messages
The pilot supports text messages. Images, attachments, audio, voice notes, group conversations, and personal-inbox imports are outside this flow. Long answers may be shortened; open Matrix for the full reply.
Replies must fit the WhatsApp customer service window. The pilot expires queued replies 24 hours after their incoming message and does not implement proactive messages or approved message templates. If a reply cannot be delivered, check the Chat in Matrix.
Help and disconnect
- Send HELP for connection guidance and the human support link.
- Send STOP or /disconnect to disconnect your WhatsApp account.
- You can also open the Matrix connection page while signed in and choose Disconnect WhatsApp.
Disconnecting revokes queued WhatsApp work and prevents further delivery for that connection. Your existing Matrix Chat remains available. Agent work already admitted on your computer may continue in Matrix; inspect or cancel it there. To reconnect, send a new message and complete the account proof again.
Where messages are stored
The canonical conversation belongs to you and lives on your Matrix computer. The platform stores the account association and delivery metadata, and temporarily encrypts queued message content for transport. Queued content is cleared when delivery finishes, is revoked, or expires. Delivery through WhatsApp is also subject to Meta's service and policies.
Test chat and production chat
During setup, Matrix may use a Meta test number with approved test recipients. That validates the connection flow; it is not a public production number.
A broader launch requires a registered Matrix business number, production credentials and webhooks, an enabled Matrix deployment, and verification of the complete message, sign-in, code, consent, and agent reply flow. Follow the chat link provided for your pilot rather than a number copied from a setup screenshot.
