Utilities

Find everyday text, data, PDF, image, and developer tools in one Matrix app.

Utilities brings the free tools directory into one searchable Matrix app. Open Utilities from Apps, choose a category, or search for a task such as counting words, converting JSON to CSV, or merging PDFs.

Requires the Utilities runtime release

Utilities is included in the upcoming Matrix runtime release. An older Matrix computer will not show the app until that release is installed. Website tools remain available without an account.

Find and use a tool

The directory contains 104 tools. In this release, 71 run inside Utilities; 33 show a Use on website action because they need browser capabilities that the Matrix app sandbox does not provide. The app explains the limitation before accepting input. Opening the website does not transfer your input or files.

Available tools include live word and character counts, literal find and replace, JSON and CSV conversion, editable CSV-to-PDF tables, QR codes, image resizing and compression, and supported PDF operations. A large CSV table displays a page of rows and columns at a time; editing a page still updates the complete table used for export.

  1. Enter text or choose a file from the device running Matrix.
  2. Use the tool's controls and inspect the result.
  3. Copy text or download the output to keep it.

Utilities asks before switching away from a workspace with input. Keep working returns to it; Leave workspace discards that workspace. Closing or reloading the app also ends the working session.

Privacy and saved work

Supported tasks process input in the app on the device running the Matrix client. Utilities does not upload that input to an agent, save it in your Matrix database, or collect the website's tool analytics. It keeps working input temporarily in the current app window. Download results before closing it. Audio notes in Utilities do not use the website's recoverable local audio sessions.

Website-only tools follow the website's processing and privacy rules. Some download local models; peer tools exchange connection metadata with a STUN service. Their availability on the website does not mean they can run inside Utilities.

Presentations and access

Utilities uses the shared app viewer in Web Canvas, Web Desktop, and Electron Desktop. Web Mobile adapts the same app to a smaller screen. These presentations ask before closing a Utilities workspace with input. Native Mobile can open the installed app's web preview; clipboard, downloads, and device capabilities depend on its web viewer. Save before navigating away from Native Mobile's preview, because its navigation does not use the Utilities close confirmation. If an action is unavailable there, use a supported web or Electron presentation.

Get Matrix on the free-tool pages opens the desktop download page. The desktop client connects to your private Matrix cloud computer, which requires a paid plan. Installing the client alone does not make the Matrix computer local or guarantee offline access. Utilities' supported transformations run on your client device after the app has loaded.
