Organization drives
Share files with organization members across Matrix computers and Desktop clients.
Organization drives
An organization drive gives members one place for shared files. Open Files → Organization drives in Web Desktop or Electron Desktop. The drive is also available in Web Canvas and Web Mobile Files.
The drive belongs to the organization. Your personal files stay in your own Matrix home, and placing a chat transcript in the drive does not turn it into a Matrix Chat conversation.
Set up a drive
- An owner shares a folder with the organization from Files.
- In Organization drives, the owner selects that folder and chooses Enable drive for organization.
- The owner chooses Ensure organization can upload to make the organization grant a Contributor grant.
- Each member opens Organization drives and chooses Open organization share when prompted.
Members can then select the drive, browse its files, and download a file. Contributors can enter an optional folder path and upload a file. The list updates when another member commits a file; Refresh is also available.
Limits and versions
- The initial drive has a 1 TB logical quota. Matrix counts committed files and uploads in progress against it.
- Each upload is limited to 100 MiB. Large folders and archives need a separate import flow.
- Uploading to an existing path uses the version you observed. If another member updated it first, Matrix reports a conflict instead of silently replacing their work.
- Files appear to other members only after Matrix verifies the uploaded bytes and commits a version.
Electron Desktop uses a native file picker for uploads and a native save dialog for downloads. A download is saved only after its size and SHA-256 digest match the selected drive version. The app never needs an R2 account key.
If access is revoked, members cannot start new reads or uploads. A previously issued short-lived download or upload link expires on its own schedule.
