Slack and Company Brain

Message your own Matrix assistant in Slack, or ask your team's shared assistant in a channel.

Bring Matrix into the place you already talk with your team. Send a private message to your personal assistant, or mention Matrix in a connected channel to ask about shared company knowledge.

Early access

The Matrix Slack app is available in selected workspaces during the pilot. Ask your workspace administrator whether Matrix is available and which channels are connected.

Connect your Matrix account

  1. Open a direct message with the Matrix app in Slack.
  2. Send connect.
  3. Open the private connection link in its reply.
  4. Sign in to your Matrix account and choose Connect my Matrix.
  5. Return to Slack and send Hi to start talking to your assistant.

The link expires after ten minutes and works once. Keep it private. If it expires, send connect again for a new one.

Your personal assistant needs an available Matrix computer and AI access. For shared company requests, you need access to the company's connected Matrix project; ask its owner if you are missing access.

Use your personal assistant

A direct message to the Matrix app is a conversation with your own assistant. Try:

Help me turn these rough notes into a clear update for my team: [paste your notes].

Draft a polite reply saying I need another day to finish the proposal.

What's on my calendar today?

Calendar and other app requests need those apps connected in Matrix and available to your assistant. Open Connect Apps in your Matrix account to check them. See Connect Apps for help.

Follow up in the same Slack thread to refine the answer. If a request needs approval or a decision in Matrix, open its Chat there to continue.

Private Slack messages and WhatsApp both reach your own Matrix assistant. They currently keep separate conversation histories.

Ask your company's assistant

In a channel your administrator has connected, mention the Matrix app and ask a question. Select the actual app mention in Slack's composer. For example:

@Matrix Where is our onboarding guide? Include the source.

@Matrix What did we decide about the launch in this thread?

@Matrix Summarize the shared project notes and highlight open questions.

Matrix replies in the requesting thread. People who can read that Slack thread can also read the reply, so use a channel appropriate for the topic.

A 👀 reaction means Matrix picked up your request. Wait for the thread reply for the answer; the reaction alone does not mean the task succeeded.

Company requests work only in connected internal channels. Shared channels with another company (Slack Connect) are not supported in this pilot.

What is the Company Brain?

The Company Brain is knowledge deliberately shared with your team's Matrix project. The company assistant can use that material to answer questions and link to its sources, making answers easier to check.

For example, your team could share onboarding instructions, project decisions, or product notes. Ask the project owner which sources are available and how to add or correct information.

Approved questions and their available Slack thread context can also become shared sources. That helps the assistant refer back to earlier decisions in connected channels. It may not see an entire long thread; include the relevant details when asking.

Connecting Slack does not automatically import every channel, email, calendar, or note. Answers depend on the sources your team has shared and the access you have today. If information is missing, ask the project owner to update the shared context.

Keep personal and shared conversations separate

Use a private DM for your own work and a connected channel for company questions. Your personal messages, memories, files, and connected accounts are not automatically given to the company assistant.

Linking Slack does not grant new company access. If you leave a project or your access is removed, you can no longer ask its assistant. The company assistant currently depends on its host's Matrix computer being available.

If something goes wrong

I cannot find Matrix in Slack

Ask your workspace administrator whether the pilot app has been installed. Use the app they identify; a preview app and the production app can be different.

Send connect in a private DM and use the fresh link. Make sure you sign in to the Matrix account that belongs to the connected organization.

There is no reply to my private message

Open Matrix and send a message to your assistant there. If it cannot answer, check that your computer and AI access are ready. Once they are, send a new Slack message.

Matrix cannot read my calendar

Check Connect Apps and the assistant's permissions in the Matrix account you linked. An existing connection may need access restored rather than another sign-in.

A channel mention does not work

Check with the project owner that the channel is connected, you have permission to ask the shared assistant, and its Matrix computer is available. Linking your account alone does not connect a channel.

I want to disconnect

Contact Matrix support to remove your personal Slack link. A workspace administrator can remove the Matrix app to stop workspace access. Disconnecting does not erase the conversations already kept in Matrix.

For sharing a Chat directly with another person, see Collaboration. For shared team files, see Organization drives.
